The International Seaweed Symposium (ISS) is held every three years under the auspices of the International Seaweed Association (ISA). For more than six decades it has been the foremost international symposium for individuals and organizations concerned with seaweed research and utilization.
Scientific research plays a fundamental role in developing seaweed and seaweed industries. The ISS provides a forum for scientists, technologists, business people and resource managers to present their latest research results, exchange ideas and develop new synergies.
You are most cordially invited to the 21st International Seaweed Symposium which will be held at Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center, Bali, Indonesia (below) from 21st to 26th April 2013.
Theme of SymposiumThe theme of the 21st International Seaweed Symposium is "Seaweed Science for Sustainable Prosperity".
The 21st International Seaweed Symposium is being held in Bali, Indonesia in the heart of the Coral Triangle where seaweed farming employs tens of thousands of coastal people in family enterprises. Seaweed utilization in the Coral Triangle has developed primarily in response to raw material demands of the carrageenan and agar industries. There is vast potential for expansion and diversification of seaweed production and utilization in the region including development of seaweeds as components of integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) systems.
There is a clear and present need for expanded scientific research and development to enable economically and environmentally sustainable seaweed industry development not only in the Coral Triangle but also in other coastal regions throughout the world. It is a goal of the 21st International Seaweed Symposium to catalyze support for such scientific activities.
Date and VenueThe 21st International Seaweed Symposium to be held from 21 to 26 April 2013 at Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center, Bali, Indonesia. The symposium is hosted by an Indonesian National Organizing Committee that is comprised of leading scientists and business people from private, academic and public sector organizations that are engaged in Indonesian seaweed science and utilization. This is the first International Seaweed Symposium to be held in Indonesia and the second to be held in a Coral Triangle country since the XVIIIth International Seaweed Symposium was held in Cebu, Philippines in 2008.
The Island province of Bali in Indonesia was the first place where extensive commercial seaweed farming began in Indonesia about thirty years ago. Active seaweed farming still takes place minutes away from the 21stst International Seaweed Symposium venue and on islands that are an easy day trip away. Bali is also a convenient point from which to travel to seaweed habitats and farm areas throughout Indonesia.
Accommodation with a range of room prices is available in the vicinity of the XXIst International Seaweed Symposium venue so that even students will not find their budgets stretched. Details will be provided in the Second Circular and on our upcoming website.
Ngurah Rai Airport is the international airport of Bali and it is located about half an hour away from the International Seaweed Symposium venue at Bali Nusa Dua Convention Centre. Meetings and transportation services will facilitate your arrival and transport to your accommodation.

The program includes plenary sessions, mini symposia, contributed oral or poster presentations, workshops, mid-symposium excursions and post-symposium tours. Several mini symposia and workshops are planned.
